Random thought: I just got a low-interest loan: I can finally buy gas again!

If you’re wondering why your life has seemed more blasé than usual, it’s not you—it’s me. The last time I released one of these “gems” was March 26th. Between gallivanting around Europe, and returning with a souvenir illness that sapped my creative juices, my writing took some time off. Fortunately (for you), the blockade has ended—at least the one in the Strait of MyMuse, thus the return of the latest blog post.

My Story of the Week was inspired by a dusty prompt mailed in by Sue Lorna-Dunes. I’m not too proud to admit that I had to look up the word she assigned, but it’s probably one you use every day. OK, ‘nuf of my rambling. Here it is. Read it and weep.

             Saddled with Mama

Little Penelope arrived at her first riding lesson wearing an exquisite equestrian outfit.

“Wow,” Loretta, her instructor, said. “You came prepared.”

Penelope shrugged.“I rarely experience conundrums in the apparel arena, but inaugural forays like this are often arduous.”

“Uh, right.”

After Penelope’s brilliant debut, a Rolls arrived, and Penelope’s mother exited the rear.

“Guess the caviar jar doesn’t fall far from the castle,” Loretta whispered.

“I’m here for Penny the Pony Princess,” Penelope’s mother hollered, spitting out tobacco saliva.

Penelope cringed. “Oops. Sometimes, Mother’s ‘joie de vivre’ is …unbridled.”

“If that’s horse-talk for friggin’ genius,” Mother said, “that’s me, Darling!”

Prompt: Magniloquent

NOVEL NEWS & NOTES…

The latest draft of Questionable Characters is winding to a close. As I mentioned last time, this baby has ballooned up like my stomach at a Golden Corral, and just like after leaving the famous all-you-can-eat joint, I’ll be doing some serious purging when it comes to my pages.

I finally reached the part in the book where I’m almost exclusively cutting and pasting scenes from the last draft—rather than creating new scenes. Since I did a lot of moving things around in earlier chapters, I do find that I need to change some of my time references, and any references to scenes that no longer exist have to be amputated as well.

One final bit about the sausage making … and please forgive me if I mentioned this earlier. It’s about my chapter titles. In the last draft, I had clever chapter names that were often clues about the chapter. To use a technical term that might only be familiar to us writers, those chapter names went “bye-bye.” Instead, I went with the conventional chapter numbers, but I added an additional element. Each chapter has the name of the character whose point of view is depicted. In some cases where I really wanted to split POVs, the chapter lists both characters. Will it work? We’ll see.

It feels good to be back home. Back in the blogosphere.

As always, thanks for listening.
