Random thought (and I know he’s gonna hate me for sharing): My dad has schizophrenia, but he’s good people!
Congratulations (or perhaps condolences) on making it through another year of hanging around with me and my world of these little stories. As you know, each one is inspired by a prompt supplied by my generous reader(s). This week’s prompt came from Dale Morgan, one of my former partners in the undercover world. I’d like to thank the big Wookie for the source of this week’s inspiration and all the good times we had in our crime-fighting days.
And now on to the Story of the Week.
Life on a Teeter-Totter
Shawn smashed the tennis ball over the net. “Finally got a new job.”
Whack. Dylan returned the serve.“Oh, that’s good.”
“Now we gotta sell the house.”
“That’s bad.”
“And move to Seattle.”
“Sounds good.”
“But Judy, my soul-crushing wife, wanted Hawaii.”
“That’s bad.”
“Fortunately, my new territory includes Maui.”
“That’s good.”
“But Judy’s psychotic brother lives there.”
“Too bad.”
“Luckily, he’s in prison for threatening me.”
“That’s definitely good.”
“But he’s getting paroled soon.”
“That’s exceptionally bad.”
“But—”
“But you hired someone to kill him and Judy?”
Shawn grunted. Whack. “I did no such thing, but…thanks for the idea!”
After finishing the second draft of Questionable Characters a couple of weeks ago, I’ve been in relaxation mode while I let all 445 pages have some alone time. While I’m anxious to see how this draft reads, I will stick to my guns and leave it alone for a bit before cracking it open for the next read. In the meantime, I’ll crank out more of my 101-word tales and maybe start thinking about what a sequel to Questionable Characters might look like. I’ve also been getting lobbied by Sandi (my partner in crime) to seriously consider adapting one of my other screenplays into a novel. She’s always loved “Grammy Goes Gangster,” my comedy about a group of old ladies who form a street gang to save a sick kid’s life. It def has some potential, so maybe I’ll give it a thought. If you like the sound of something like that, let me know.
