April 3, 2025 Post

Random thought: I wrote this on April 1st. I’m so exhausted after a 31-Day March!

Welcome back, Kids. Who’s ready for an action-packed, 101-word tale? Me neither, but that’s not going to slow either of us down in the least, right? Our prompt for the Story of the Week comes from unlikely suspect Michael Wharton, who sent in what he described as one of his favorite outdated words. Not any more, Michael. Thanks to you, IT’S BACK, BABY!

It Really Was a Team Effort

The precocious children lined up dominos on the floor.

“Please play out back so you don’t break anything like your accident-prone Daddy,” Mom said.

Once in the backyard, their falling domino chain triggered a mousetrap which bounced off Dad’s leg.

Startled, Dad knocked over the flaming barbecue, igniting the shed.

Dad sprinted into the kitchen. “Backyard’s on fire!”

“Daddy knocked over the barbecue!” the kids laughed.

“Tell Mom why!” Dad demanded.

“You’re clumsy?”

“No. The truth!”

“Mommy can’t handle the truth!”

Mom glared at Dad. “Did you show them A Few Good Men again?”

“I’m lawyering up—after I call 9-1-1.”

Prompt: Haywire

NOVEL NEWS & NOTES…

Since Questionable Characters is still in the hands of my trusty editor, I don’t have any updates for you on that front, although I can give you a bit of news in my world of movie-making. While I really have no plans to completely jump back in, we are getting back on the schedule to shoot the cinematic version of one of my favorite 101’ers. It’s a little tale called “Unfortunately, Not Everybody’s a Baseball Fan” (as seen in Vol. 1 of FAST FICTION: 101 Stories, 101-Words Each. Available everywhere—well, everywhere I sell books, and by that I mean Amazon and BookBaby. We have a production meeting to pick up where we left off after a break to re-cast one of our leads. Looks like we’re set for a May 9th night shoot. Stay tuned for more.

That’ll do it for this week, so, as always, thanks for listening.

Scotty out

PS—Sending along my gratitude to all of you who rated both of my stories last week. I know it was a stretch reading all 101 words of my bonus material, but you came through like the champs you are and I appreciate it!
